Today, low- to mid-latitude deltas face increasing sediment starvation due to: Hydropower development (dams and reservoirs in river basins), Aggregate mining, and Accelerated subsidence from population growth and resource exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without <strong>effective climate stabilization<\/strong>, the sustainability of densely populated <strong>low- to mid-latitude deltas<\/strong> will be <strong>increasingly difficult to preserve<\/strong>, potentially <strong>ending the delta\u2013human symbiosis<\/strong> as we know it.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image164_7c18a8-dd .kb-image-has-overlay:after{opacity:0.3;}<\/style>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image164_7c18a8-dd size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"908\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/traceclimate.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/delta-fig1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"kb-img wp-image-166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/traceclimate.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/delta-fig1.png 908w, https:\/\/traceclimate.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/delta-fig1-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/traceclimate.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/delta-fig1-768x394.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">exceeding dispersal processes. This leads\u2014particularly in large deltas\u2014to the accumulation of substantial sediment masses both onshore and in the subaqueous zone^(9). The world\u2019s largest deltas began developing around 8,000 years ago, spanning much of the Holocene epoch (the past 10,000 years of Earth\u2019s history). Their existence has depended on a steady supply of sediment from river catchments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>b,<\/strong> Idealized delta dynamics. Deltas expand seaward and upward from initial bayhead settings, a process favored by relatively stable global sea levels. Most of the world\u2019s deltas have a mean elevation of less than 2 meters above present mean sea level^(88), though precise elevation data remain limited. Deltas naturally subside due to sediment compaction, including organic matter, under their own weight. Ecologically diverse, deltas exhibit subtle elevation gradients and are prone to flooding, channel avulsions, meandering, storm-driven marine incursions, and localized erosion. Despite these hazards, deltas have historically provided space and resources for human societies to develop and thrive (Anthony et al., 2024)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-13b9120\" data-block-id=\"13b9120\"><style>.stk-13b9120 {margin-bottom:0px !important;}.stk-13b9120 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:var(--stk--preset--font-size--medium, 20px) !important;}@media screen and (max-width: 1023px){.stk-13b9120 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:var(--stk--preset--font-size--medium, 20px) !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle\"><strong>The Mediterranean deltas<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mediterranean basin (including the Black Sea) is characterized by a plethora of deltas that have developed in a wave-influenced setting. Many of these deltas are sourced in sediments by river catchments that have been variably dammed. The vulnerability status of a selection of ten deltas subject to different levels of reduction in fluvial sediment supply following damming was analysed by quantifying changes in delta protrusion area and protrusion angle over the last 30 years. The rationale for choosing these two metrics, which do not require tricky calculations of longshore bedload transport volumes and river \u2018influence\u2019, is that as sediment supply wanes, increasing relative efficiency of waves leads to longshore redistribution of reworked sediments and progressive \u2018flattening\u2019 of the delta protrusion.
